EU will have new residence card for third-country nationals

The European Union Council confirmed the informal agreement on the proposal for a single model of the residence permit for people from third countries. The regulation agreed at the ambassadorial level of the 28 Member States provides for the creation of a new common residence permit in order to improve the security features of the residence permit card and thus prevent counterfeiting. The current card, which entered into circulation in 1997, was compromised due to serious incidents of counterfeiting and fraud. After confirmation of the agreement, the text of the Regulation will be presented to the European Parliament for voting and then to the Council of Ministers of Justice and Home Affairs for adoption.
