Are children born in Portugal entitled to Portuguese citizenship?

Children born in Portugal are entitled to the Portuguese citizenship, provided that their parents meet one of the following requirements:

1) One of the parents has Portuguese nationality;

2) Parents do not have Portuguese nationality, but at least one of them has been legally resident in Portugal for at least 5 consecutive years.

With the new Portuguese laws, children of immigrants who have lived in Portugal for at least two years will automatically be considered Portuguese.

In order to apply for the Portuguese citizenship, parents must provide some documents: • Document proving that at least one parent has been legally resident in Portugal for at least 5 years, issued by SEF; • Document proving that both parents were not in Portugal serving the home country (for instance, diplomats). This document may also be requested to SEF; • Child's birth certificate; • Application form Model 1F.
